    FOWPS Newsletter – May/June 2016

    Coffee Shop

Thank you for everyone’s help on Saturday 7th May.  The coffee shop went really well and we raised £215.

FOWPS organises the Coffee Shop in the community centre 3 times a year on Saturday mornings.  We often run a tombola as well.

To run the event we require parents to volunteer for a couple of hours to help out and also to bake about 10 -12 cakes.  I think Woodcote Primary has quite a good reputation for fantastic cakes – We have some really good bakers amongst us!  It’s really well supported by helpers, bakers and people coming along too with their families.

We often raise more than £200 from the morning.  We also love running it as it’s such a popular Woodcote Community event.

    100 Club Winner

The 100 Club prize winner for April is Liz Dickins. She has won £30.

    Pub Walk

We were thrilled to have a warm and balmy evening for the 43 ladies who joined in for the annual Ladies Pub Walk and Talk organised by FOWPS. The entire walk is around 3 miles and is fairly level. It is a lovely way to spend an evening and to chat to other ladies in the school community who you might otherwise not have the chance to speak to. We would especially recommend coming along to our next one if you are new to the school.

This event is open to all local ladies so were pleased that we had past and current parents, aunts, friends and teaching staff represented. With 43 ladies in attendance we raised around £360 for various projects around the school. Thank you!

We look forward to having many of you again next year and hopefully a few more new faces too…

    Summer Fair – Friday 17th June 5pm – 8pm

In acknowledgment of the Olympics taking place later this year, we are having a sports themed summer fair. There will be netball hoops to shoot, penalty shootout at football goals, a bouncy castle, tennis skills, horse rides, throwing at targets, long jump, skittles and a variety of food stalls. There will also be a face paint and nail polish stall. There’s a mini Olympics activity course to complete with a lucky dip prize to all who finish!

We have asked various groups to put on displays, including our own year 6 class. The choirs will entertain us with musical offerings to.

Raffle – to be drawn at the Summer Fair

This year, for the raffle, we will be focussing on themed hampers. We already have three fabulous top prizes but need your generosity to create some smaller hamper gifts. You will be asked to bring in items to suit the hamper themes. For example, you might be asked to donate bath time goodies (these would include soaps, towels, shampoo, bubble bath, bath crayons, sponges, face cloths, candles or bath salts). Once everyone has brought in their items, we will create hampers using those items. These will then be raffled off.

Collection for bottle and jolly jars tombola

As always, we will be organising the ever popular jolly jar stall and bottle tombola.

We are collecting for the Summer Fair Tombolas, starting next week. We will collect items in the playground each morning. Please don’t take them to your classroom!

Week beginning 23rd May: Bottles for the tombola. (Make sure the contents are in date to at least July 2016)

Week beginning 6th June: Jolly Jars

*We will be collecting your hamper donations alongside these other collections between 23rd of May and the 15th of June.  Look out for themed bags/boxes to put your items into.

This year, the competition for bringing in the most will be run in the school house teams (Owls, Red kites, Kestrels, Eagles & Hawks). There will be a bag for each team for the collection of hamper donations and the team that brings in the most each week will win a Dress Down Day!

Thank you so much for your support and generosity. It will really help the Summer Fair be a success.

    We need volunteers!

There will be a sign up sheet for anyone who wishes to help in any capacity, whether it be setting up or clearing away or manning a stall for a period of time. Please look out for these sheets in the front of the school over the coming weeks. We do need your help to make the event successful. So please give some time, even if it is only 30 minutes.

  • Arrived Safely in Devon

    Mon 16 May 2016

We arrived safely, accompanied by our Woodcote Wanderer Teds, and had time for a paddle in the sea!

Back at base we got settled in and tried on our fabulous hoodies!

  • Thanks You

    Fri 13 May 2016

Thank you – to all the parents and staff that came along on Saturday to help with our Ground Force Day. After a great deal of work, we managed to achieve some noticeable improvements, especially at the front of the school where we have taken out several hedges and developed some open borders. There is still a lot to do over the next few weeks to complete the work, so please bear with us.

Aspens Menu Change – on Thursday 19th & Friday 20th May Aspens have swapped the menu so that Fish Fingers & Chunky Chips will be on the menu for Thursday not Friday. The swap is only for these dates. Please check your orders have been changed if necessary. Aspens have also asked that parents check with their children whether they have enjoyed the meal ordered for them. With the new summer term menu from Aspens, we have found a lot of children have not liked the meals ordered for them and therefore eat very little.

If the weather prevents the day from taking place, an alternative day of Wednesday 29th June will be used.

KS2 Sports will be on the Langtree field from 9.30am to lunch time.

KS1 Sports will be on the Woodcote field from 1.15 – 3.15pm.

  • Ladies Pub Walk & Talk news

    Mon 09 May 2016

A warm and balmy evening greeted the 43 ladies who joined in for the annual Ladies Pub Walk and Talk organised by FOWPS. After a quick catch up and drink, we left the Red Lion Pub in Woodcote around 7:15pm on Friday night. We ambled gently (to Mrs Bodeker’s disgust..I do believe I heard her say; “Come on ladies, pick up the pace. How can you work up an appetite at this speed!”) uphill along Whitehouse road til we reached Long Toll. After a short walk passed the Greenmore ponds, we turned into Shirvel’s Hill and then took a left into the woods. Thankfully, because of the lovely weather in the week leading up to the walk, the usual muddy patches were fairly dry and easy to navigate.

The  bluebells greeted us in abundance. It was a beautiful sight and the lovely fresh scent of the woods and warm breeze created a wonderful atmosphere. We continued through the woods until we reached The Sun Pub in Whitchurch. The walk had taken us around 45 minutes to this point. Everyone was thirsty by then, so a few drinks were had whilst sitting and chatting in groups- both inside the pub and in their garden area out back.

At around 8:30 we did the route in reverse. Back through the woods, almost dark enough to use torches, but not quite. We arrived back at the Red Lion at around 9:15 and were treated to sandwich platters and bowls of chips.

The entire walk is around 3 miles and is fairly level. It is a lovely way to spend an evening and to chat to other ladies in the school community who you might otherwise not have the chance to speak to. We would especially recommend coming along if you are new to the school.

This event is open to all local ladies so were pleased that we had past and current parents, aunts, friends and teaching staff represented. With 43 ladies in attendance we raised around £360 for various projects around the school. Thank you!

And of course, a big thank you to the Red Lion for supporting us by providing the sandwiches at the end of the walk!

We look forward to having many of you again next year and hopefully a few more new faces too…
