SEN and Disabilities

Intent

At Woodcote Primary School, our intent for Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) provision is to ensure that all children receive a high-quality and ambitious education regardless of need or disability.  We believe that it is vital that our pupils are equipped with the tools needed to become independent thinkers with an appetite for learning, and are happy, healthy and proud of who they are.

Through our high-quality planning, teaching and provision we:

  • Aim to ensure early identification and intervention for children with SEND to ensure that children reach their full potential.
  • Ensure that all children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which is differentiated to enable children to make progress and understand the relevance and purpose of learning.
  • Provide an accessible learning environment which is tailored to the individual needs of all pupils.
  • Develop children's independence and life skills.
  • Regularly monitor the progress of children with SEND.
  • Provide good quality and relevant training for all staff members supporting children with SEND.
  • Work in partnership with parents and carers, encouraging dialogue in the best interests of their child.
  • Work closely with external agencies and other professionals to hone and develop our provision for children with SEND.

Implementation

At Woodcote Primary School, pupils with SEND:

  • Are included in all aspects of the school day.
  • Are provided with quality first teaching, adapted to their needs.
  • Are respected, and their contributions valued and acknowledged.
  • Have a Pupil Profile detailing their strengths, needs, strategies to support them and desired outcomes.
  • Have three Pupil Profile reviews each year, with input from the child, parents and class teacher, as well as the SENDCO if required.
  • Have an individual provision tracker to monitor their progress and ensure interventions are effective and matched to their needs.
  • Have access to an adapted curriculum.
  • May have specific 1:1 or small group intervention to support their phonics, maths or literacy learning.
  • May take part in social and emotional interventions such as ELSA or Lego Therapy.
  • May have enhanced support in lessons.
  • May access personalised support, such as pre or post teaching.
  • May access support from external agencies such as Educational Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, SENSS and CAMHS to develop specific targets/programmes tailored to the child's individual needs.

Impact

As a result:

  • Pupils are polite, well mannered and confident, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Pupils feel safe at school.
  • Pupils are confident in adults at the school.  They are confident that their concerns are followed up quickly by staff and are dealt with effectively.
  • Pupils like being at school; they enjoy their lessons and are confident that they are making good progress.
  • Pupils in Year 6 successfully transition to secondary school.  The school is in close proximity to the local secondary school and for those children transitioning there, there are lots of opportunities to experience the secondary school, including an enhanced transition for children with SEN.
  • Most children with SEND make similar progress to their peers from their starting points due to the use of resources and small group intervention which meets the needs of the pupils (this is dependent on pupils' particular special educational needs).
