    FOWPS Newsletter 16 October 2015

It’s Christmas Market time on 27th November from 6-8pm.

Can you believe that in as little as 6 weeks’ time, we will be enjoying our Christmas Market? We have many wonderful stalls lined up for you to enjoy, ranging from books, to jewellery, to skincare and handmade items. Your children will delight you with their lovely singing while you enjoy some mulled wine and hot food from our kitchen. It’s a super way to spend a Friday night and get some of your Christmas shopping done before the December rush.

Last year’s market was a huge success, raising around £1700 for the school. Some of which has been spent on the new Oak playground and fencing, new IT equipment, class trips, the new screen in the school foyer and many other items that improve your children’s school experience.

This year we would love it if we could beat that total! To do this, we need your help.

Santa will be visiting, and for the first time you’ll be able to pre-book your slot to ensure you skip the queues! Signup sheets will be available in the week leading up to the Market. However, being so close to Christmas, Santa has asked if anyone would be willing to be an elf for the evening as his usual elves are all busy. We’d love to hear from you if you think you’re cut out to be one of Santa’s Helpers!

We are also looking for helpers from our parent body to volunteer some time between 5:30 and 9pm for various tasks. This includes setting up the rooms for stall holders, manning stalls or helping to pack up and clear away at the end of the event.

We have decided to have a programme printed for the event so that you are aware of the timings for the two school choirs, the slots available for visiting Santa’s Grotto and showcasing the variety of stalls that will be there. We are offering advertising spaces to local businesses in the programme, so if you’d like to have your business advertised in this year’s programme, please email fowps@woodcote-primary.co.uk.

As a school we always run a bottle tombola and a jolly jar stall. We will once again be collecting the bottles and jars as class competitions. The winning classes will be rewarded with a special treat. Look out for the collection dates on the school calendar.

In the run up to the Christmas Market, we have asked a few parents to act as class reps and liaise with various classes answering any questions and generally sharing information with you. In Hornbeam we have Rachel (Charlie’s mum), in Beech it is Helen (Josie’s mum), in Ash we have Steph (Finlay’s mum). For Rowan it is Amanda (Archie’s mum), in Maple it is Carla (Tori’s mum) and in Willow we have Kath (Megan’s mum). Oak class rep still to be confirmed.

If you have any ideas, questions, are able to help out or can provide us with any prizes for our raffle, please get in touch with any of the mums mentioned above.

Woodcote Primary Poppy Project – Can you knit, crochet or sew?  Then we need your help to make poppies. Woodcote Primary will be celebrating Armistice Day on the 11th November and conducting our own memorial ceremony in the centre of Woodcote at 11.00am.  Everyone is welcome to join us and we’d like to involve our community by wearing poppies that have been knitted, crocheted or sewn by local residents. We would like to get enough together for all the children to be given the opportunity to donate to the appeal and wear one of the poppies, and if we get more, we will sell them throughout the village.  If we get more than we can handle, we will make a wreath to lay or a collage for the school – ‘lest we forget’. We will be supporting The Royal British Legion, who provide lifelong support for the Armed Forces community, serving men and women, veterans and their families.

If you would like to help, we will provide the wool, and we also have some needles.  We can provide a pattern but if you want to go ‘freestyle’ and create your own designs, that would be fine too.  There are loads of patterns available.  Just type in ‘free poppy patterns’ into Google, or why not try Pinterest?

If you need wool or needles or a pattern, please call 07798 702041. Any completed poppies should be dropped off at the school and please make sure you leave your name. Let’s see how much we can raise!

Additional Funding – please see the attached document or collect one from the Foyer regarding the additional benefits of registering your child as eligible for Free School Meals. If you would like any further advice please see the school office.

Okay, this isn’t a times tables game. This is a fantastic game for learning the meaning of new words. Not only does it adjust the difficulty to your skill level, but for every question you answer they donate rice to people who need it. Can you get to level 4? Can you get to level 10?
