Lenten Pretzels - 9th Feb 2016

Did you know that pretzels are a special treat for Lent?  Beech Class learnt about the story of Lenten pretzels and then we made some.  The shape of the pretzel is the same as arms crossed in prayer and that is what the monk who first made them used as his inspiration when he was using up the last of the ingredients for his bread before Lent started.  So Lenten pretzels are a bit like the traditional pancakes eaten on Pancake Tuesday.
We enjoyed making the pretzels and folding them to make the special shape.  It looks easy but it is surprising how you can get in a knot with a piece of dough.
