  • Summer Fair News

    Thu 30 Jun 2016

Holding the fair on a Friday evening has once again proved successful with a huge turnout of families coming to enjoy a family-friendly evening out. How lucky were we with the weather? After dismal weather all week and a poor forecast for the event, we were truly blessed with a fabulous sunny and calm evening on which to enjoy our activities.

This year we provided many sports-based activities in tribute to the Olympics taking place later this summer in Rio.  School Stalls included: Mrs Bodeker’s Jumping course, Netball hoops challenge, Hockey Dribble, Penalty Shoot out, Cricket Hit the Stumps, Rowing Machine Challenge, Olympic lucky dip trail, Jolly jars, Bottle tombola, the Cafe, Bar, BBQ and Ice cream stalls, Wet Sponge Stocks, the Bouncy Castle, Nail polish and Tattoos, Fruit skewers and Lemonade and Pony rides.

Special mention to Woodcote Cricket club for running the Hit the Stumps stall for us, to Leah and Ruby for their Fruit and lemonade stall, to Helen for providing and supervising the rowing machines and to Charlotte for taking charge of the nail polish and tattoo stalls.

As for previous events, West Berkshire Breweries provided the bulk of the drinks for the bar area. Thank you to them for their generous donations and continued support of our school.

All these stalls were manned by staff, past or present pupils of the school and parents. Thank you all for volunteering. Without you these stalls would not be possible.

External stalls were provided by GKR KarateWoodcote After school ClubWoodcote Breakfast ClubWoodcote Pre-School and Tom (who was raising funds for NASIO charity)  with a display of Judo provided by Inkai.

  • Newsletter week ending 30th June 2016

    Thu 30 Jun 2016

Reminder – there will be an INSET Day tomorrow – Friday 1st July 2016

Please cancel your child’s dinner on the Aspens website – there were 19 meals still booked and paid for when Aspens called earlier this afternoon.

Class Photo orders – your child should have received the Tempest order form for their Class Photo last week. Please complete any orders and send them back to the school office by 9am on Monday 4th July. Please ensure the envelope is well sealed if you are paying in cash and complete the front of the envelope with the information about name, class and payment amounts. Tempest will be collecting the orders for processing on Monday 4th July from 9am onwards. Late orders will need to be sent off independently by parents. We expect the completed photos back to school before the end of term.

Sports Day – it was very disappointing to have to cancel sports day for a second time. The weather has been so dreadful over the last few weeks which makes trying to arrange sports day very difficult. It has been decided to hold the sporting activities within the school day and on the school field and the village recreation ground. We will have to wait until the ground has dried out sufficiently to allow children to complete their races safely. This will mean that, whilst parents will not be involved, at least the children will not miss out and the teams can work towards winning the sports cup.

Year 5 & 6 production – this year’s play is called ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’! The dress rehearsal will be held on Tuesday 5th July from 1.30pm, the evening performance on Wednesday 6th July from 6.30pm and the afternoon performance on Thursday 7th July from 1.30pm. The Year 6 children have sent out invitations for tickets to this event to the Yr 5 & 6 parents. The productions will last approximately 1.5 hours and there will be a short interval on Wednesday evening when refreshments will be available to purchase.

Library Reading Challenge – children are being encouraged to sign up for ‘The Big Friendly Read’ – the Summer Reading Challenge 2016, at their local Library, Woodcote. The ‘Big Friendly Read’ challenges children aged from 4 to 11 to extend their reading experience over the long summer holiday, giving them access to our wide range of books. The theme is based on “invention, mischief and friendship”, all ideas which are explored in Roald Dahl’s most famous books.

Children can join FREE at any Library in Oxfordshire. They will need to visit a Library three times during the summer and read six books. As they read their books, each child will receive collector cards that make up a set to complete their folder. Each card features an original piece of Quentin Blake artwork from a classic Roald Dahl tale, as well as some fun activities on the reverse. Kids are going to love collecting these!  These build to become a unique record of your child’s Summer Reading Challenge, and a great way to mark Dahl’s centenary.

Woodcote Library will be running themed events throughout the summer holidays and we will make sure that we let you have our Summer Newsletter so you are kept informed of all that is going on here. • Woodcote Primary Summer Fair 2016!

    Mon 06 Jun 2016
  • End of Summer term 1

    Wed 01 Jun 2016

Well we have had a busy few weeks. The children have been working tremendously hard this term. Here are some things we have been learning. In Maths we have been doing lots of counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10. Here is a great song we have learnt to help us practice our twos:  Counting by twos

Henry taught us how to recognise when a sequence is in multiples of twos, fives or ten by giving us some top tips.

We have also been halving and quartering numbers by sharing into 2 or 4 groups. The children are beginning to understand this well and know that the groups have to be equal. Any help to practice this at home would be very useful. Using food is always a fun way of practicing this!

In English we have been working hard on our spellings and have been practising writing the numbers to twenty every day. We have also been looking lots at suffixes and how they change a word. This week we looked at er and est to make adjectives stronger. We also looked at adding s or es to make a singular noun into a plural. We have learnt the rules through games and are enjoying practising this in our writing.

We finished our topic on our local environment with a lovely walk around the village talking about what makes a place nice and what things can make the environment less attractive. The children made posters encouraging people to visit the best parts of Woodcote. Thank you to parents who escorted us and made this possible.

Larry really enjoyed our school disco and showed us some pretty impressive moves!

Finally the children really enjoyed learning about the life cycle of a butterfly through our caterpillar to butterfly kit. We released the butterflies on Thursday in our nature reserve. We hope to see them again flying around our field!

We hope the children are having a lovely half term break and getting plenty of rest for their final term as year ones! The year is flying fast! We have plenty more to look forward to next term. There will be a trip to Beale Park on the 23rd of June to consolidate our science work on animals and the RNLI in History. A letter will be sent out the first week back. Do let us know asap if you can help with this.

The children are also very excited about their water fight on the 17th of June. Please see the letter for this. They will need to bring a swimming costume, towel and a water pistol if possible. Please note if weather is not suitable this will be postponed.

We are also really looking forward to learning about the queen and the royal family this week ready for our Garden Party celebrations for her 90th Birthday. Don’t forget to make your crown this week! The entries will be displayed around the school.

This will be a very busy term so apologies if the updates on our website slow down a bit! Do let us know if you have any concerns, we are always happy to talk to you.

    Enjoy your week!

    Mrs Hall and Miss Ouelette
