PSHE / RSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education and Relationships, Sex and Health Education)
Intent
Our PSHE curriculum encourages our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It is our vision that our children will have high aspirations and achieve their goals. Our strong emphasis on developing good emotional literacy develops our children’s understanding of the importance of their mental and physical health and equips them with the skills needed to become active, resilient members of society now and in later life. Through developing an understanding of the importance of being emotionally and physically healthy, PSHE at Woodcote Primary School encourages children to value themselves, each other, and their contributions to the wider world.
Implementation
RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) is taught at Woodcote Primary School as part of our PSHE curriculum. We follow the SCARF programme, which builds on the values of Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship (SCARF). We have timetabled lessons across each key stage, from Reception through to Year 6.
Our core values- respect, trust, honesty and positivity- are at the heart of everything we do. Teachers use informal assessment tools to review how the children are progressing within each area of PSHE learning, including circle time discussions, using drama to imagine real-life scenarios and independent tasks.
Our teaching and learning follows a spiral curriculum approach (where pupils will meet the same topics throughout their time at school). Each term, the whole school follows the same theme. Each time they meet the topic, prior learning is reinforced, and knowledge and skills are developed.
With EYFS, Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) is a prime area because it is fundamental for children’s cognitive development and laying the foundation for children's overall well-being, learning and future success. Through play-based learning and positive relationships, social and emotional skills are modelled and developed continually throughout each and every day.

To find out what this looks like in each age group, see the PSHE progression grid.
Every year group has a floor book to record learning across each unit.
To assess the children's learning, a spider diagram will be created at the beginning of each unit and then added to at the end in a different colour to show how their learning has progressed. For KS1 this will be a class spider diagram kept in the floor books and then in KS2, each child will create their own spider diagram which will be kept in the back of their R.E / PSHE books. A system to record summative assessment of PSHE, and other foundation subjects, is being developed by the teaching team and will be recorded on Insight once completed.
Class learning is enhanced through whole school and key stage assemblies and focus days such as Children’s Mental Health, Anti-bullying and Careers Day.
The school follows an ethos of ‘Growth Mindset’, supporting learners to develop resilience and to challenge themselves to continue to grow. We also use Zones of Regulation across the school to support children with developing their awareness of feelings, energy and alertness levels whilst also developing a range of tools and strategies to help with regulation, wellness and self-care.
Our PSHE provision aims to have a positive impact on the whole child, including their attainment and progress in all areas of learning, by equipping each child with the tools needed to navigate the wider world and building on their self-esteem.
Impact
We take pride in our school ethos of “Learning, Caring, Sharing” and by the time our children leave Woodcote School they will:
-
become independent thinkers with a thirst for learning, having fostered a love of curiosity and challenge.
-
be polite, appreciate difference and diversity, show empathy, kindness and respect, fostering a sense of community and build friendships with everyone.
-
understand and demonstrate the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
-
persevere with determination to be the best they can, inspired by rich opportunities to explore the world.
-
be able to understand and manage their emotions.
