Across Key Stage 2 we follow Monster Phonics Superhero Spelling.  A cast of superheroes and powerful memory cues help pupils learn key spelling rules and concepts. 

Each week consists of three core phases: Learn, Build and Show.  Early in the week, the pupils will receive their weekly spelling words and work on the rules that apply to these words (plus any that don't!).

In Year 3, the pupils are given 10 spellings as homework and also may be given an additional 5 spellings to continue practising common exception words from Key Stage 1 or spellings from earlier in Year 3.

Pupils are expected to:

• write each spelling out
• practise any they find tricky using our strategies to learn spelling words (pyramid or rainbow writing, for example). 
• write some of those spellings into sentences to show that they understand the meaning of each spelling .

After practising the words and thinking about the spelling rules throughout the week, pupils are tested on the spellings on the following Monday morning.
