Maths

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 we follow the mastery approach to learning, which assumes everyone can learn and enjoy mathematics.  Planning is provided which is sequential and coherent and ensures that children build their knowledge, understanding and skills in small steps.  In EYFS, there are daily teaching sessions where children are given the opportunity to learn practically and actively and also to explain their thinking.  Stem sentences are used by the whole class together to embed learning, to ensure number knowledge is embedded in their memory and develop fluency.  The use of precise vocabulary means that all children are enabled to communicate their thinking.  Please follow the website link if you would like to find out more about this approach.  Mastery Explained | NCETM.

In addition to the daily taught sessions, maths is used everywhere in the environment.  Just a few examples of this are: starting each day with the date, the children collect cubes for their rewards chart, which is a tens frame; sharing out the snacks and resources to make sure it is fair and resolving it if not; counting the number of children in the line / having school dinner or packed lunch; working out how long the masking tape needs to be or how big the container needs to be.  The children are mathematicians very day in their play!
