Assessment

In Reception, our assessment is largely based on our observations of and engagement with the children on a daily basis.  As a team, we talk regularly about the children-what we are seeing and what they need.  This forms the basis of our teacher judgment on whether the children are on track with their learning.  We also use this discussion to plan next teaching steps, based on their needs as well as their interests.

At the end of Reception, we have to assess the children against the Early Learning Goals, of which there are 17.  If the children reach 12 of these goals in Communication and Language (C&L), Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), Physical Development (PD), Literacy (L) and Maths (M), then they are deemed to have reached a 'Good Level of Development (GLD)'.  If children do not meet these goals, it does not mean they have not made fantastic progress, but that when they begin in Year 1, they will need to keep learning from the Early Years curriculum rather than moving wholly onto the National Curriculum.

We will keep you informed on your child's progress, both on a daily basis when we see you at drop off and pick up, and in more detail on parents' evenings.  If you need a meeting in between these times, we are always happy to meet with you at an additional time.  Most importantly is for your child to continually make progress, not the end goals.  We have attached the Early Learning Goals so you can see the expectations for the end of the Reception Year, but please do not focus too much on these, more on your child's learning journey itself - both the progress and their enjoyment of learning through play.
