Expectations

Being the oldest pupils in the school, Year 6 pupils do earn a lot of respect from younger pupils.  With this respect comes a lot of responsibility too.

Year 6 are expected to support the smooth running of the school in a number of ways, but most importantly by being positive role models to other children; through their behaviour, their attitudes and their work.

Independence & Responsibility

In Year 6 we will be asking the children to take responsibility for their learning, any kit needed (PE or books) and also their homework as we believe this is one of the key skills needed for secondary school.

During the school day they will have opportunities to develop their Independence and responsibility by being Oak Buddies, reading their buddy stories and helping them at lunchtimes, and also by being Play Leaders for younger year groups at lunchtime.

Please use the Reading Journal for things that may be worrying them (or you) – homework, friendship groups or issues at home to mention a few.  We will be putting the emphasis on the children to take the lead if they have something that is worrying them.  We will encourage pupils to speak to the class teacher in the first instance or pop a note into the class Worry Box.  If it is a sensitive issue then pupils also know they can make a note in their Reading Journal instead of the Worry Box, as these are checked daily.

Mobile Phones

We are aware that a number of pupils bring mobile phones to school as they are now walking home independently.  Whilst a mobile is not mandatory in Year 6, we understand why you may want your child to have one.  Phones need to be turned off before coming onto the school playground and will be stored safely in the classroom and returned at the end of the day.  Again, we ask that they don't get turned back on until pupils have left the school playground.

Friday reader

We have a Friday Reader.  This is where your child chooses to read a section from their favourite book to the class – children will sign-up in class for the week that they would like to be Friday Reader.

Come and speak to the team if you have any worries or want to know anything about the way the curriculum works.  If you are unable to get into school please phone the office and leave a message, we'll get back to you as soon as we're not teaching the class.

Remember the key words for children this year are INDEPENDENCE & RESPONSIBILITY.
